Godel Escher Bach by Douglas R Hofstadter is the best book I have every read in my life full stop. However on page 678 of this 1979 book he says:

"There may be programs that can beat anyone at chess, but they will not be exclusive chess players. They will be programs of GENERAL [his emphasis not mine] intelligence."

Twenty years later Hofstadter said that sentence was "embarrassingly bad".
