Yea, that occurred to me also. When you can do a degree in statistics
as the main subject, there is no room for engineering, etc.

One solution is for every research team to include a stats degree person.
Or at least have access to a stats PhD to analyse their data.
(They might have to try several people though, to finally get the
results the want!).  ;)
