they are several seconds behind, it's wasting my time and may well make the
other person feel like they should hurry. I don't like it when that happens
to me.

another asshole?

I have enormous respect to both of you, and I want to be like you when I
grow up, even thought I recognize I am older than thou. This custom has
nothing to do with constitutions, founding fathers, assholes, any of that.
I fear that both esteemed gentlemen have completely misunderstood the custom
of holding a door open.

In our beleaguered times, when culture wars take precedence over plain old
human dignity, we are pressured to treat everyone the same, but of course
the custom originated with gentlemen holding the door open so a lady can
pass thru, since her hands were occupied holding her long skirts out of the
mud and horse shit on the street. Later, once the skirts were abandoned for
more practical clothing, the custom remained, as customs often do, but now
it has a clear purpose. When a lady is behind us, we can see her reflection
in the glass door, so holding the door open allows a more complete view.

Sociologists have studied this widely and can see what is going on: the door
holders are hoping to reposition themselves at her 6 oclock. Conclusion: we
men are dogs. Reprehensible we are! Irredeemable, despicable,
dishonorable, ignoble, and subject to the influences of evolution, which
made us this way.
