What I find odd about that position is superdeterminism isn't necessary to
justify such a belief. Regular old determinism suffices for those who are
incompatibilists regarding free will. (For what it's worth I am a
compatibilist regarding free will).

Not to mention, it's irrational to reason backwards from what one wants to
be true.

Right, I would point them to the wiki article on compatibilism, or Dan
Dennett's book on free will (Elbow Room).
