1) Because they don't need to, and 2) remove the parasites (the health
insurance companies) from the middle, put the money directly into the
hospitals.
As far as I'm aware, it's the usual story: Middlemen profiting from
setting up a layer that doesn't need to exist. American healthcare is
scandalously profitable, has nothing to do with the actual real cost of
health care and the profits don't go the the actual providers of the
healthcare.
I'm far from being an expert on american healthcare, but I don't see why
it doesn't suffer from the same problems as the music and publishing
industries. If there's money to be made without actually contributing
something positive to society, there will be some lower form of life
that will jump in and exploit that as much as they can.
The real question is what can be done about that.
